Today’s Food and the Impact on Health

You eat healthy, yet still you feel tired. Despite bulking up on fibre and downing liters of water you still suffer from constipation. And then there is heart disease, it runs in your family, and you aren’t sure if you are doing everything you can to prevent the same from happening to you. We get it, these are three of the major health complaints we hear all the time, and the truth is it isn’t what you are doing, but rather what is being done to the very food you are eating. Changes in agriculture practices, soil erosion, and the over use of unnatural pesticides and fertilizers have rendered our food way less nutritious than it was when our grandparents were around. What does that mean? Well it means that even the healthiest of diets might fall victim to nutrient gaps, which can impact every process in our body including (if not especially) our energy levels, digestion, and heart health.

That is why when Sam Graci created greens+ he worked tirelessly to investigate every single ingredient that went into the formula to ensure when you take a scoop of greens+ you support every single aspect of your health and support any dietary gaps that modern day food might cause.

One of the major ingredients in greens+ is wheat grass, a cereal grass that is grown from the wheat seed and contains high amount of chlorophyll. This potent superfood has some pretty amazing effects on your health and can help improve three of the major health complaints that our society is faced with.

Energy

Wheat grass is one of the best sources of chlorophyll; the very molecule that makes plants green. Chlorophyll has a very similar structure to hemoglobin (the oxygen carrying molecule in our red blood cells), only instead of an iron molecule in its centre it contains a magnesium molecule in its place. Because of this structure it is a known blood builder, and helps to improve oxygen utilization in our own body. In fact it has been reported that those starting their day off with wheat grass have improved feelings of energy, stamina, and endurance.

Further to this wheat grass helps to purify the liver and neutralize harmful toxins that can bog our body down, leaving us feeling sluggish and lethargic. When we are able to stimulate the liver and support the removal of toxins, our body is free to work more efficiently, meaning more energy for doing the things we want to do after doing the things we have to do.

Digestion/Gut Health

The health of our digestive system is critical to our overall health, but with so many of us suffering from some form of issue, be it heartburn, constipation, or irritable bowel syndrome, something is definitely not working.

Again, thanks to the rich chlorophyll content of wheat grass, there is an exceptionally high amount of magnesium in just one small scoop. Magnesium, known as “nature’s anti-stress mineral” helps to relax muscles both of the skeletal system and of the digestive tract. This not only keeps the bowels open, but also helps to draw water into them, keeping things moving and you healthy.

Wheat grass consumption has also been shown to help hinder the growth of harmful bacteria in our bodies. When “bad” bacteria become over populate, inflammation, digestive issues, allergies, and improper food digestion can also ensue. By limiting the growth of these bad bacteria, and supporting the growth of “good” bacteria we can dramatically improve the health of our digestive system.

Heart Health

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Canada, but can be heavily linked to dietary and lifestyle choices.

Magnesium, our good ol’ anti-stress mineral, can help to relax blood vessels and improve blood pressure; one of the leading causes of heart attack and stroke.

Wheat grass has also been shown to block the absorption of cholesterol in the body, thereby supporting healthy cholesterol levels, and preventing the development of atherosclerosis.

Chlorophyll also contains the potent free-radical fighter superoxide dismutase (SOD), a copper containing protein that is found in mature red blood cells. Unchecked free radical damage can be a huge contributor to heart disease, as the damaged tissues can lead to chronic inflammation which has been shown to further the risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke.
