Replenish your body for reNEWed energy!

In our fast-paced, life-hack world, quick-fixes are the norm; they get us results, and they get them fast. But the path towards true health doesn’t involve shortcuts. Common energy fixes like caffeine and sugar may give you the jolt you need, but they do little at tackling the problem of low energy at the core, and may actually prove to be more deleterious down the road.

Caffeine. Relying on caffeine alone for dealing with low energy can do a body more harm than good. Caffeine is a stimulant, which impacts the central nervous system. It can temporarily relieve fatigue and drowsiness, but is also an addictive substance that in excess, can impact calcium absorption, increase fasting insulin concentrations, and negatively impact stress hormones. For some, caffeine may also negatively impact their health causing feelings of anxiety, depression, insomnia and restlessness, which can further exacerbate low energy levels.

Sugar is fast burning carbohydrate, offering readily available energy that stimulates the release of dopamine, one of our “feel good” hormones. Sugar’s effects, however, are very short-lived: when we eat sugar, our pancreas releases insulin to help clear the sugar from the blood; the more sugar we eat, the more insulin is secreted, leading to blood sugar imbalances as we are constantly battling the sugar highs and the subsequent lows. The metabolism of sugar also depletes our body of key energy boosting nutrients like B-vitamins, while also negatively impacting our digestive health, allowing bad bacteria and yeast to proliferate, setting the stage for nutrient malabsorption.

Chronic stress takes a toll on our body, and has been linked to chronic inflammation as well as serious conditions like high blood pressure, blood sugar imbalances, thyroid problems, insomnia, gastro-intestinal ailments, and mental health issues like depression; all of which can have an impact on energy in their own right. The obvious answer to chronic stress is simply to remove the stressor, but this is easier said than done.

Dealing with low energy means nourishing your body with the power of whole foods, and supporting it through tried and tested herbs, vitamins and minerals that target some of the root causes of low energy. This means looking beyond the “quick fix”!
