Fermentation and me – a love story

I have a little secret… There’s something I’ve done every single morning for the past 13 years that I feel is an integral part of my daily health regimen.

I’ve always been pretty open about my health routine; I eat whole foods, in-season, mostly fruits and veggies (but I’m not a vegetarian), with loads of healthy fat slathered on top. But there’s one more thing that’s been a bit of a secret…

Here it is: every morning I start my day with a big glass of greens+, and have for many years!  But, for the last 2 years, I’ve switched things up and taken fermented whole body NUTRITION with greens+. This was my very first fermented food, and helped to inspire and design my “fermented foods heal the gut faster” recommendation.

In my opinion, fermented whole body NUTRITION with greens+ is just plain fantastic. It has a full serving of Vegan greens+ O, and contains 70% fermented. It also triggered a craving in me for other fermented foods, like sauerkraut and kombucha. Plus, the folks at Genuine Health have added some really cool fermented ingredients into the mix. Foods I wouldn’t normally eat everyday.

Purslane – If you live near me (Okanagan, BC) you might mistake purslane as a weed. It grows wildly in my garden and during my first year gardening I viewed it as a pest. Not anymore – it’s now my favourite wild food! This succulent lettuce adds a lovely flavour to my summer salads, AND is high in omega 3 fatty acids. Actually, it contains the highest source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA -normally found in fish oil) in any plant! But, outside of my garden in the summer, this is a hard veggie to get my hands on so I’m very happy to get a dose everyday in to fermented whole body NUTRITION with greens+

Amla Fruit – I’m a BIG fan of Ayurveda, an ancient form of medicine from India. Love yoga? Well, that’s thanks to Ayurveda! Amla fruit is an important tool for balancing the body in Ayurvedic Medicine. It’s also chock full of Vitamin C and other antioxidants.

Fermenting a green food powder like this one can be a tricky business. It’s important to retain all of the benefits of fermenting, while making it stable (we don’t want it to keep fermenting while it’s in our fridge…). The experts at Genuine Health spent years perfecting a technique that uses a traditional method of fermenting, which unlocks each food and increases each ingredient’s potency and nutritional power, while carefully choosing the types of bacteria they use. They’ve done a fantastic job at marrying old-world techniques with the technology we have now.

So, why do I take fermented whole body NUTRITION with greens+ every day? Well, it’s an easy way to get a pile of antioxidants, a rich concentration of the phytonutrients found in fresh fruits and veggies PLUS the unique benefits of fermentation. Most of all, it makes my body feel very happy…I know this because I really crave it. This knowledge helped me to form my biggest piece of nutritional advice: Love your body and give it what it wants – the benefits will show!
