Q: There has been some media coverage about the botanical ingredients found in US “big-box” retailers like Target and Walmart either being mislabeled or not including any of the active ingredients when tested using a DNA barcoding method. Does Genuine Health test its herbal-containing products?
A: At Genuine Health, quality, safety and efficacy are of utmost importance and therefore we have rigorous processes in place to ensure our products do what we say they are going to do and that they are free of any adulterants. In fact, for us this process begins as early as when we begin to formulate a product. We start by creating a supplement that has the right dose of ingredients present, because we know that a sprinkling of an ingredient, while may look good on the label, just won’t work. At Genuine Health we make sure we have the correct dose, the research proven dose, so that we can ensure that our products will do what we say they will. Every medicinal ingredient has a specific health purpose within the formula and therefore you can be ensure that you are not paying for empty “fillers”. Further, we select only the highest quality of those ingredients to go into our products. The old adage “you get what you pay for” is quite appropriate here. For example, did you know that when buying botanical herbs you can get a cheaper ground up version or you can get an extract version? The difference between the two is exponential. The ground up herbs may or may not contain any active ingredients, but the standardized extract is guaranteed to contain active ingredients. That is why greens+ with its standardized extracts and research proven dosages remains the #1 selling green food on the market today. Because it works! So the next time you are picking up a green food, turn that label around and read it, make sure it has extracts so that you can be sure that your product is going to work. It is also important to note that what is NOT in the product is just as important as what’s in the product when it comes to quality. At Genuine Health we have a list of ingredients that are found in popular supplements today we just won’t use because while their efficacy might be visible, their safety record just doesn’t meet our standards including Maca, Yerba Matte, and Mangosteen. Finally, at Genuine Health we engage in a variety of testing from raw ingredients all the way to finished product testing to ensure quality and efficacy. This may be FTIR or “fingerprint” testing or other scientifically valid and validated methods (AOAC, USP etc.), or testing for a key marker unique to that raw material. Genuine Health constantly monitors the market and is aware of common adulterants and thus always takes appropriate steps to assure none are present in the raw materials and finished products. Further to this, finished product testing is done to assay for key actives to ensure that each dose of the product contains what the label promises. Last but not least, we never use “fillers”, fully disclose all non-medicinal ingredients on our labels and have allergy attestations on file for our ingredients and use this to generate our “does not contain” list on the packaging. This attention to detail ensures our premium quality products are safe and effective – every time!”
