Magnesium also works in a close partnership with calcium. Calcium enters the cells through a series of calcium channels, which are tightly guarded by magnesium. When there is insufficient magnesium in the diet, calcium cannot enter the cells, but rather deposits itself in the soft tissues like that of the heart, kidneys, and vascular system contributing to such diseases as heart disease, atherosclerosis, and kidney stones.
